Dr. Murray Penner has been appointed to the role of Head, Department of Orthopaedics, VCH and PHC effective September 01, 2013.
In this newly created position, Dr. Penner will be responsible for leading the continued development and implementation of quality assessment and manpower planning for the VCH and PHC Departments and for medical leadership input into the coordination and delivery of outstanding Orthopaedic services throughout VCH and PHC.
Dr. Penner graduated with honors from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and was awarded a prestigious NSERC 1967 Scholarship. He worked for a short time in the Rocket Design Group of Bristol Aerospace in Winnipeg prior to entering Medical School.
Dr. Penner graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary in 1992 and completed a Rotating Internship in Victoria, BC in 1993. He completed specialist training in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC in 1998, and fellowship training in adult foot and ankle reconstructive surgery at the Flinders University of South Australia in Adelaide, Australia in 1999. After a short period of practice in Queensland, Australia, Dr. Penner returned to Canada and began practice at the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, BC, and in 2004, joined the Medical Staff at St. Paul's Hospital. Amongst his contributions at St. Paul’s include the development and implementation of the Foot and Ankle Screening and Triage (FAST) Clinic model, which is now emulated in other acute settings across Canada.
Dr. Penner is the co-designer of two total ankle replacement systems and developed the first computer-guided ankle replacement instrumentation system. He is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of British Columbia, and is actively involved in clinical research and teaching. He has travelled, published and lectured extensively. He is the current head of the Department of Orthopaedics at Providence Health Care and is the immediate Past President of the Canadian Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (2011-13).

Dr. Penner’s appointment has been confirmed by the VCH Board and is subject to approval later this month by the Providence Health Care Board.
