Regional Cardiac Program Physician Leadership

We are very pleased to announce several new physician leadership appointments in the Regional Cardiac Program. These new positions will work in partnership with site and regional leaders to ensure the cardiac program’s goals and objectives are achieved by developing, implementing and evaluating quality improvement initiatives and supporting evidence-based practice across our region.

Dr. Graham Wong:  Regional Physician Lead role for Acute Coronary Care. Currently, Dr. Wong is the Clinical Director of the Coronary Care Unit at Vancouver General Hospital and is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at UBC. He has been the Medical Co-Director of the Vancouver Coastal Health Regional STEMI Program since 2007. Dr. Wong is heavily involved in medical education and sits on the Postgraduate Committee for the UBC Cardiology training program in addition to being an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Dr. Sean Virani: Regional Physician Lead role for Heart Failure. Dr. Virani is a key opinion leader in heart failure care in Canada. He is the founding Director of the Heart Failure Program at Vancouver General Hospital and Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Virani has authored a number of papers on chronic and acute decompensated heart failure and is a principal investigator on numerous research trials. He serves on the Provincial Steering Committee for Heart Failure, the executive of the Canadian Heart Failure Society and chairs the Ministry of Health/BCMA Practice Support Program for Heart Failure.

Dr. Saul Isserow: Regional Physician Lead role for Cardiac Rehabilitation. Dr. Isserow is the Medical Director for the Cardiac Rehab program at VGH and the Director of the VGH Centre for Cardiovascular Health and the Associate Director for Cardiology Services, UBC Hospital. Dr. Isserow has received several awards for teaching and clinical excellence including the Master Teacher Awards from the Department of Anaesthesia (2005) and Department of Medicine 2010. He has also been recognized with the VCH award for Clinical Excellence (2008) and the VGH Medical Staff's Peoples Choice Award (2005).

Dr. Jonathon Leipsic: Regional Physician Lead role in Cardiac Imaging. Dr. Leipsic is a highly respected leader in his roles of Chairman of the Department of Radiology for Providence Health Care (PHC) and Vice Chair of Research for the UBC Department of Radiology and Co-Director of Advanced Cardiac Imaging at PHC. Dr. Leipsic’s role will focus on strategic development and alignment of cardiac imaging (Echo, Nuclear, Cardiac CT and MRI) within the region. As well, he will play a major role in creating and leading a robust quality improvement program for cardiac imaging – including cultivating a peer review process, working towards standardized reporting as well as system and process improvements.
